The Hudson School District - A Brief History

The history of schools in Hudson is provided by the Hudson Historical Society.

1948

A six-week summer school program is established at the former Hills Estate, including sewing, fields and forests

1950

Alvirne opens as a junior and senior high school for 400 students

1951

Alvirne graduates its first class of 25 students; 764 students were enrolled in the district

1957

Alvirne was accepted as an area “Vocational Agricultural School “a fine herd of milkers was put in place and a silo added to the barn

1958-1960

An eight- room addition was added to the south end of Alvirne as well as a stand along voc/ag building

1963-1965

A 16- room addition was added to the north end of Alvirne due to town growth and tuition students from neighboring towns

1970-1971

Year- round schooling at Alvirne

1974

Alvirne High School destroyed by fire - Alvirne students went to Memorial School in dual sessions and Memorial students were bused to St. Francis School in Nashua

1975

Alvirne High School reopens, one year plus one day after the fire

1976-1977

Hudson leased St. John’s School for a year and then purchased it, renaming it Library Street School

1980

SAU office at Hudson Memorial

1982

School Board increases from 3 to 5 members

1988

 Voters approve Nottingham West Elementary School

1989

Nottingham West opens

SAU office moves to Webster School

Renovations at Hudson Memorial

1993

Vocation center opens at Alvirne named in honor of Wilbur “Web” H. Palmer

2000

Voters approve construction of Hills Garrison Elementary School and additions and renovations to Hudson Memorial

2001

Hills Garrison opens with preschool and grades 1-5

2003

After 100 years, Hudson becomes its own SAU (school administrative unit, separating from Litchfield)

2009

 Public kindergarten begins

2018

Votes approve improvements to the Wilbur H. Palmer CTE Center - $17M is provided by the state

2020

Full-day kindergarten is approved and starts in the fall

2020

Pandemic closes schools in March 2020 for the remainder of the school year

2021

The Wilbur H. Palmer Center completes a $25 million renovation
